MUMS offers private assessment and removal of lumps, bumps, lipomas, and sebaceous cysts at our state-of-the-art medical clinic in Solihull.
The service is provided by Dr Huda, Consultant Dermatologist, and Dr Sri and Dr Sanah, Private GPs with extended roles in dermatology and minor surgery.

In many cases, your lump, bump, lipoma, or cyst can be assessed and removed during the same appointment, where clinically appropriate.
However, not every lump is suitable for immediate removal. Depending upon its size, location or clinical features, your clinician may recommend an ultrasound scan, biopsy, histopathology, or referral for treatment elsewhere.
Your clinician will take a clinical history and carefully examine the lump, bump, lipoma, or cyst.
Depending upon the type of lesion, assessment may include visual examination, palpation and, where appropriate, examination with a dermatoscope.

Pre-assessment clinical advice about suitability for removal is not provided. A clinical assessment is required so that the doctor can properly examine the lump and advise you.

Where your clinician is satisfied that the lump, bump, lipoma, or cyst is suitable for minor surgery at MUMS, removal can often take place during the same appointment.
Occasionally, removal may need to be arranged for another appointment.
Some lumps may be too large, too deep, located in an unsuitable area, or have features requiring further investigation. In these circumstances, your clinician will explain the findings and advise you about the appropriate next steps.
This service is available for patients aged 16 and over.
The method of removal will depend upon the type, size and location of the lump or lesion.
Your clinician will explain the most appropriate technique, which may include excision, cutting or shave removal.
The treatment area will be numbed using local anaesthetic before the procedure.
If an excision is required, you will usually need stitches. Your clinician will explain the procedure and obtain your consent before treatment begins.
Lumps and bumps can develop for many different reasons and are often benign. However, a new, changing, growing, painful or troublesome lump may warrant clinical assessment.

A lipoma is a soft lump formed by an overgrowth of fatty tissue beneath the skin.
Lipomas are commonly benign and may not require treatment. However, some people choose to have them removed because they are growing, uncomfortable, prominent, or affecting their confidence.
Your clinician will examine the lump to assess whether it appears consistent with a lipoma and whether removal at MUMS is appropriate.
Some suspected lipomas may require an ultrasound scan before removal to help characterise the lump and confirm the most appropriate next step.
Sebaceous cysts are commonly used terminology for cyst-like lumps that develop beneath the skin.
They may remain small and cause no problems, but some can become larger, uncomfortable, inflamed, or troublesome.
Where appropriate, the cyst can be removed by minor surgery under local anaesthetic.
Your clinician will assess the lump first and advise whether removal at MUMS is suitable.
Some lumps, bumps, cysts, or suspected lipomas require an ultrasound scan before removal.
Ultrasound can provide additional information about the size, depth and characteristics of a lump and may help your clinician determine the appropriate next step.
MUMS offers private ultrasound scanning of lumps, bumps, and soft tissue.
Soft Tissue Ultrasound Scan – £220
These scans are currently available with a MUMS Sonographer on Mondays and Thursdays.
Your clinician will advise you if an ultrasound is recommended.
Occasionally, your clinician may recommend taking a small biopsy rather than removing the whole lump immediately.
The biopsy can usually be taken during the assessment appointment and sent to the laboratory for histopathology analysis.

Your clinician will explain why a biopsy is recommended and obtain your consent before proceeding.
Histopathology – Laboratory Analysis
Most tissue removed during this type of minor surgery is sent to the laboratory for histopathology analysis.
This allows the tissue to be examined microscopically and helps establish or confirm the diagnosis.
Histopathology analysis costs £240.
Your clinician will advise whether laboratory analysis is required and obtain your consent before tissue is sent.
Laboratory pathology reports are usually available within approximately one week, although Bank Holidays or the need for additional laboratory testing can occasionally delay results.
When we receive your result, a copy will be shared with your doctor and we will arrange a free-of-charge follow-up appointment to discuss the findings with you.
Not every lump or cyst is suitable for removal within a private minor surgery setting.
If the clinician considers that the lump is too large, too deep, in an unsuitable location or requires different specialist investigation or treatment, they will explain this to you at your assessment.
The £200 assessment fee remains payable because the appointment provides the clinical assessment and professional opinion, regardless of whether removal can subsequently be performed at MUMS.
Please be aware that MUMS do not offer removal or aspiration of ganglions.
If your assessment indicates that the lump is a ganglion, our clinician will explain the findings, but we will not be able to remove or aspirate it at MUMS.
Please tell us when booking if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electrical medical device, as this may affect which treatment methods are suitable for you.
Please also tell your clinician about any significant medical conditions, allergies, or medication, particularly if you take anticoagulants or other blood-thinning medication.
Following minor surgery, you will be given information explaining how to care for the wound and what to expect during healing.
Where required, we will arrange a free-of-charge follow-up appointment.
If tissue has been sent for histopathology, we will also arrange for you to discuss the laboratory result with your clinician.
