Why Are Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Check-Ups Important?

Problems affecting the ears, nose and throat can have a significant impact on everyday life.

Symptoms such as hearing loss, tinnitus, recurrent infections, persistent nasal blockage, dizziness, snoring, swallowing difficulties, or changes in the voice may require specialist assessment to establish the cause.

An ENT consultation allows your consultant to take a detailed history, examine the relevant area and decide whether further investigations, tests or procedures are required.

Some ENT symptoms are relatively straightforward to diagnose and treat, while others may require further investigation. Having timely access to a specialist can provide an earlier diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and reassurance.

If you are waiting for an NHS ENT appointment or would simply prefer to be assessed privately, MUMS offers rapid access to Specialist ENT Consultants in Solihull without the need for a GP referral.

ENT Services at MUMS

Nasal Cautery

Nasal cautery is a procedure commonly used to treat recurrent nosebleeds. Your ENT Consultant will first assess the cause of the bleeding and, where appropriate, cauterise the affected blood vessel to help reduce further episodes.

Nasal Endoscopy

MUMS ENT Consultants perform nasal endoscopy using a thin, flexible endoscope with a small camera and light. This allows the Consultant to examine areas inside the nose and nasal passages that cannot easily be seen during a standard examination.

It can help investigate symptoms such as persistent nasal blockage, sinus problems, nasal discharge, nosebleeds and some throat or voice symptoms.

Nasal Bone Manipulation

Following a broken nose, the nasal bones can sometimes heal out of position.

Where clinically appropriate, our ENT Consultants can perform nasal bone manipulation to reposition the nasal bones and improve their alignment while the injury is still healing.

Timing is important, so we recommend contacting MUMS promptly following a suspected nasal fracture so that an ENT Consultant can assess you and advise whether manipulation is appropriate.

Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps are soft, non-cancerous growths that develop inside the nose or sinuses. They can contribute to a blocked or runny nose and may affect the sense of smell or taste.

Our ENT Consultants can assess your symptoms, examine the nasal passages, and advise on appropriate treatment.

Facial Pain and Discomfort

Facial pain or pressure can have a number of possible causes, some of which may involve the nose or sinuses.

An ENT assessment can help determine whether your symptoms are related to an ear, nose, or throat condition and whether further investigation or treatment is required.

Dizziness and Vertigo

Dizziness and vertigo can have many different causes.

Some conditions affecting the inner ear and balance system – including BPPV, Ménière's disease, labyrinthitis and vestibular disorders – can cause sensations of spinning, imbalance, or dizziness.

An ENT Consultant can assess your symptoms and advise whether further investigation or treatment is required.

Nasal Discharge and Blockage

Persistent nasal blockage or discharge may be associated with conditions such as rhinitis, allergies, sinusitis, a deviated nasal septum, or nasal polyps.

Our ENT Consultants can investigate the cause and recommend appropriate treatment.

Watering Eyes

Persistent watering of the eyes can have several possible causes, including problems affecting tear drainage.

Where a blocked tear duct or related ENT condition is suspected, specialist assessment can help determine whether further investigation or treatment is appropriate.

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the perception of a sound when there is no external source. It is often described as ringing, buzzing, humming, or whooshing in one or both ears.

There are many possible causes, including hearing loss, earwax, and some ear conditions. An ENT assessment can help investigate possible causes and determine whether further tests or treatment are required.

Ear Discharge

Persistent or recurrent discharge from the ear should be medically assessed.

Possible causes include infection and other conditions affecting the ear canal or middle ear. An ENT Consultant can examine the ear, identify the likely cause and recommend appropriate treatment.

Recurrent Sore Throat

Repeated or persistent sore throats can have a number of causes, including recurrent tonsillitis, infections, allergies, and acid reflux.

An ENT Consultant can assess your symptoms and advise on appropriate investigation and treatment.

Change in Voice

A persistent change in your voice, including unexplained hoarseness, should be investigated.

Our ENT Consultants can assess the throat and voice box and, where appropriate, perform further examination such as flexible endoscopy to help identify the cause.

Lumps and Growths

A new or unexplained lump or swelling in the neck or throat should be medically assessed.

An ENT Consultant can examine the area and arrange further investigations where required.

Swallowing Difficulties

Difficulty swallowing is known as dysphagia and can have a number of causes involving the mouth, throat, or oesophagus.

Our ENT Consultants can assess your symptoms and advise on the appropriate investigation, referral, or treatment pathway.
