The liver function test at MUMS checks enzymes and proteins in your blood and includes:

Bilirubin, ALT, AST, Total Protein, Alkaline Phos, Albumin, Globulin, Gamma-GT.

A Liver function test is a blood test. We also offer lots of different value for money profiles/panels/clusters with liver function testing included.

Our clinicians look for enzymes that you’d find in your blood only when your liver is damaged or has a disease. Others check that the organ is working the way it should.

A liver function test can help identify damage, inflammation, or disease in the liver. They are also known as liver blood tests or hepatic function tests, and the results are interpreted in the context of a person's overall health and other tests.

Enzymes:
Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), can indicate liver damage or disease.

Proteins:
Albumin and Total Protein, which the liver produces. Abnormal levels can suggest a problem with the liver's ability to function.

Bilirubin:
A pigment that the liver helps process. High levels can cause jaundice and may indicate a problem with the liver or gallbladder.

Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT):
Indicators of liver function.

Your liver is an extremely important organ, and it is imperative that your liver health is good as it helps break down the foods that you eat, it keeps your blood clean, and it is the organ that stores energy and makes proteins.

When your liver is not working properly – you may have yellowing skin, or your speech may be slurred.

You may want to have this test to check for a liver disease such as hepatitis (an illness in which your liver swells and can cause serious issues). General symptoms of liver problems include:

  • Lack of appetite
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fatigue or on-going tiredness all the time
  • Weakness or feeling very tired
  • Abdominal pain
  • Jaundice
  • Dark urine or light-coloured poop (less common)
  • Swelling in your belly (less common)

Often, however, you don’t notice any symptoms.

You may wish to have this test at MUMS if you:

  • Drink heavily or have an alcohol use disorder
  • Have a family member with liver disease
  • Are very overweight, especially if you also have diabetes or high blood pressure
  • Take medicine that can harm your liver
  • Have gallbladder disease or anaemia

The liver function test can also help MUMS clinicians learn whether an illness is getting worse or how well treatment is working.

If you want to see how well your liver is functioning, check for infection, hepatitis or scarring of the liver – call us today. You may wish to have a simple LFT at MUMS to determine the effect of certain medications – acne treatment for example.

MUMS offer Liver Ultrasound Scans too which cost £240
