Mr Akash Sharma is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon who is available to see adult patients here at MUMS (Midlands Ultrasound and Medical Services), in Solihull. He specialises in seeing patients with knee injuries or any condition that leads to painful symptomatic knee conditions, such as osteoarthritis.
Mr Sharma qualified with a Distinction in Clinical Practice from St. Georges Hospital Medical School, London in 2007 and undertook his Basic Surgical Training in London and Oxford. He went on to complete his higher surgical training in the West Midlands on the Birmingham Rotation and obtained his FRCS (Trauma and Orthopaedics) in 2016. He currently works as a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham which is recognised as a leading and internationally renowned specialist orthopaedic centre.
Mr Sharma is an expert in all aspects of knee conditions. He specialty is keyhole surgery, knee replacements and reconstructions. Mr Sharma is happy to provide second opinions for those with complex knee conditions.
Mr Sharma strives to use the latest technologies and advancements in orthopaedics to deliver the best surgical outcome for his patients. To date, he has performed the greatest number of cases using the Robotic Surgical Assistant (ROSA) for total knee replacements within the country and is currently contributing to the largest ongoing trial on robotic technology in total knee replacements using the MAKO robotics system (funded by the National Institute of Health Research). Mr Sharma has delivered lectures at the British Orthopaedic Association and Computer Aided Orthopaedic Society for the use of Robotic technology in his practice. He uses his expertise to regularly train other consultants nationally wanting to learn how to perform robotically assisted knee replacements.
Mr Sharma has been awarded three academic prizes in his medical career. He has a research background in both Clinical and Basic Sciences. He has co-authored 5 book chapters and is often invited to give lectures to trainee doctors at universities.
