Commonly used contraceptive injections in the UK are Depo Provera and Sayana Press.  They contain progestogen.  They are effective for 13 weeks.

Effectiveness and Mode of Action

It is a very effective method of contraception – over 99% effective

It mainly acts by preventing the ovaries releasing an egg (ie prevents ovulation). It also thickens the mucus from the cervix, making it difficult for the sperm to enter the womb and thins the lining of the uterus, thus preventing a fertilised egg to implant.

  • You don’t have to think about contraception for as long as the injection lasts
  • It is not affected by most medications.
  • Can be used whilst breastfeeding

  • Altered periods – they can become irregular, prolonged, heavier or may stop altogether and may continue for some time, even after the injections has been stopped
  • Weight gain may occur
  • You may suffer from hormonal side effects – eg mood changes, headaches, skin changes eg acne.
  • Periods and fertility can be delayed for up to a year after stopping the injection

  • Prolonged use of Depo Provera or Sayana Press can cause thinning of the bones.
  • There is a very small risk of a reaction at the point where the injection is given ie bruising, swelling or scarring.

Depo Provera is injected into a muscle, usually in the buttock or the front of the thigh, by a health care professional

Sayana Press is injected just under the skin of the front of the thigh or the abdomen.  It can be given by a health care professional, or you can give it yourself at home. We will teach you how to give yourself the injection.

In the first instance we organise a consultation for you which can be remote or face to face with our Gynaecologist who will discuss with you the benefits, risks and the procedure of the method.
