Consultation and Injection  £240

Contraceptive Injection at MUMS

Dr Nimah Bholah offers the contraceptive Injection at MUMS.

The cost of the Contraceptive Injection service that we offer at MUMS is £240.00. This includes the consultation and the injection and administering of the injection.

The injections contain progestogen. They are effective for 13 weeks.

Effectiveness and Mode of Action

It is a very effective method of contraception – over 99% effective.

It mainly acts by preventing the ovaries releasing an egg (i.e., prevents ovulation). It also thickens the mucus from the cervix, making it difficult for the sperm to enter the womb and thins the lining of the uterus, thus preventing a fertilised egg to implant.

Advantages

  1. You don’t have to think about contraception for as long as the injection lasts.
  2. It is not affected by most medications.
  3. Can be used whilst breastfeeding.

Disadvantages

  1. Altered periods – they can become irregular, prolonged, heavier or may stop altogether and may continue for some time, even after the injections has been stopped.
  2. Weight gain may occur.
  3. You may suffer from hormonal side effects – e.g., mood changes, headaches, skin changes e.g., acne.
  4. Periods and fertility can be delayed for up to a year after stopping the injection.

Risks

  1. Prolonged use can cause thinning of the bones.
  2. There is a very small risk of a reaction at the point where the injection is given i.e., bruising, swelling, or scarring.

Procedure

The injection is injected into a muscle, usually in the buttock or the front of the thigh, by a Dr Nimah Bholah

It is injected just under the skin of the front of the thigh or the abdomen.
