At MUMS Solihull, we offer private joint assessment and pain-relieving injections for suitable adults experiencing problems affecting the knees, elbows, or shoulders.

Our service is designed as a convenient one-stop appointment. Your clinician will assess your symptoms and joint, discuss the available treatment options and, where an injection is considered clinically appropriate, this can usually be performed during the same appointment.

There is no need for a referral from your NHS GP and there are minimal waiting times.

Knees

Dr Rajib Pal, MUMS Private GP, offers private assessment and pain relief injections for knee joint pain on Saturdays at MUMS.

The appointment includes a consultation and clinical assessment to establish whether an injection is an appropriate treatment for you.

If suitable, the injection can be administered during the same appointment, avoiding the need to return to the clinic on another day.

Joint injections may be considered for people experiencing pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis and degenerative “wear and tear” changes of the knee.

Elbows

Mr Pantelis, Consultant Upper Limb Orthopaedic Surgeon, provides specialist assessment and injection treatment for elbow conditions at MUMS.

Mr Pantelis specialises in conditions affecting the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand, including conditions commonly referred to as tennis elbow and golfer's elbow.

Following assessment, an injection may be offered during the same appointment where clinically appropriate.

Some injections benefit from precise placement using ultrasound. If ultrasound guidance is clinically required, Mr Pantelis can perform this at MUMS.

Additional cost for ultrasound guidance – £150

Shoulders

Both Dr Rajib Pal and Mr Pantelis offer assessment and pain relief injections for suitable shoulder conditions.

Your clinician will assess your symptoms, medical history, and shoulder before recommending the most appropriate treatment.

Where an injection is clinically indicated, it can usually be performed during the same appointment.

If specialist ultrasound guidance is required, this can be provided by Mr Pantelis.

Joint injections can provide a useful non-surgical treatment option for some people experiencing pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis and other suitable musculoskeletal conditions.

Your clinician will discuss:

Your appointment lasts approximately 45 minutes, allowing time for a comprehensive assessment and for you to ask questions before deciding whether to proceed.

You will be asked to provide your consent before an injection is administered.

Who May Benefit from a Joint Injection?

Pain relief injections may be suitable for adults aged 50 and over experiencing pain or stiffness affecting the:

• Knee
• Shoulder
• Elbow

They may be considered where symptoms are associated with osteoarthritis or other conditions considered suitable for injection following clinical assessment.

An injection will only be performed where the clinician considers it appropriate and safe.

When Might a Joint Injection Not Be Suitable?

Joint injections may not be appropriate for everyone.

Please tell us when booking if you have:

• Rheumatoid or inflammatory arthritis
• A joint replacement
• Previous septic arthritis
• Previous surgery or metalwork within the affected joint
• A bleeding disorder or take blood-thinning medication
• A recent or suspected fracture
• Broken, infected or damaged skin around the injection site
• A known allergy or hypersensitivity to any medication used for injections
• Had a steroid injection into the same area within the previous three months
• Diabetes
• High blood pressure

Your clinician will assess your individual circumstances and determine whether it is safe and appropriate to proceed.

What Happens if I Am Not Suitable for an Injection?

Booking a consultation and injection appointment does not mean that an injection will automatically be given.

Your clinician will assess you first.

If, following assessment, an injection is not clinically appropriate, you will only pay for the consultation:

Consultation with Mr Pantelis – £245

Your clinician can then discuss alternative treatment or investigation where appropriate.

What Happens After a Joint Injection?

Some people experience temporary discomfort following an injection.

Your clinician will give you appropriate aftercare advice before you leave MUMS and explain when you can return to your usual activities.

Simple pain relief may sometimes be helpful for a short period following treatment, where medically appropriate for you.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects are generally uncommon but can include:

• Temporary pain or discomfort around the injection site
• Bruising
• Temporary facial flushing
• Changes in skin colour around the injection site
• Loss of fatty tissue or dimpling around the injection site
• Temporary increase in blood glucose, particularly in people with diabetes
• Temporary increase in blood pressure
• Little or no improvement in symptoms

Rare complications can include:

• Infection
• Injury to surrounding structures, including tendons or ligaments
• Allergic reaction

Your clinician will explain the risks relevant to the particular injection being offered before obtaining your consent.

You will also be advised about symptoms requiring medical attention following the procedure.

The purpose of a joint injection is to reduce pain and improve function.

Some patients experience significant improvement, while others experience more modest improvement or no benefit. The amount of pain relief and how long it lasts varies considerably between individuals and depends on the underlying condition and treatment used.
