What Does a Cervical Smear Test Check For?

Cervical screening is designed to identify changes that could potentially increase the risk of cervical cancer in the future.

At MUMS, your cervical sample is tested for:

High-Risk HPV

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common virus. Certain types of HPV are described as high-risk because persistent infection with these types can cause changes to the cells of the cervix.

Most HPV infections clear naturally without causing problems, but persistent high-risk HPV infection is associated with an increased risk of cervical cell abnormalities.

Cervical Cytology

Cytology involves examining cells collected from the cervix under a microscope to look for abnormal cellular changes.

Combining HPV testing with cytology provides useful information about both high-risk HPV and the appearance of the cervical cells.

How Is MUMS Private Cervical Screening Different?

The NHS Cervical Screening Programme currently uses primary HPV screening.

This means that the cervical sample is initially tested for high-risk HPV. If high-risk HPV is detected, the sample is then usually examined for abnormal cervical cells (cytology).

At MUMS, our private cervical screening service includes both high-risk HPV testing and cytology as part of the laboratory assessment.

Your MUMS clinician will explain your results and advise whether any further investigation or follow-up is recommended.

What Is Included in the £300 Cervical Screening Appointment?

Your appointment includes:

• Consultation with a Women's Health GP or Consultant Gynaecologist
• Discussion of your cervical screening history
• Opportunity to discuss any relevant symptoms or concerns
• Cervical examination
• Collection of your cervical sample
• High-risk HPV testing
• Cervical cytology
• Laboratory analysis
• Results sent to you
• Free-of-charge follow-up to explain your results
• Advice about any recommended next steps

The appointment takes approximately 30 minutes.

When Will I Receive My Results?

Results are usually available within approximately 7 days.

Occasionally laboratory processing or additional assessment may mean that results take a little longer.

Once your results are available, they will be shared with you and you will be offered a free-of-charge follow-up to have the findings explained.

If your result indicates that further investigation is recommended, your clinician will discuss the appropriate next steps with you.

What Happens if HPV or Abnormal Cells Are Found?

An HPV-positive result does not mean that you have cervical cancer.

HPV is extremely common, and many infections clear naturally.

If high-risk HPV or abnormal cervical cells are identified, your clinician will explain what the result means and whether you require:

• Repeat cervical screening
• Further monitoring
• Colposcopy
• Additional gynaecological assessment

MUMS can help you understand your result and arrange appropriate onward care where required.

Can I Have a Cervical Smear if I Have Symptoms?

Cervical screening is primarily designed for people without symptoms.

If you are experiencing symptoms such as:

• Bleeding after sex
• Bleeding between periods
• Postmenopausal bleeding
• Persistent, unusual vaginal discharge
• Pelvic pain

please tell us when making your appointment.

These symptoms do not necessarily mean that anything serious is wrong, but a cervical smear alone may not be the most appropriate investigation.
