At MUMS Solihull, we offer comprehensive private cervical screening for women who want convenient access to cervical health assessment without a lengthy wait.
Our cervical screening service includes both high-risk HPV testing and cervical cytology, providing information about the presence of high-risk HPV and whether abnormal cervical cells have been identified.
You do not need a referral from your NHS GP.
Our private cervical smear service is available with:
Dr Nimah Bholah and Dr Juliette Witek – Private GPs specialising in women's health
Miss Poonam Pradhan and Miss Natalie Woodhead – Consultant Gynaecologists
All offer cervical screening with consultation, examination, and follow-up of your results.
Cervical screening is designed to identify changes that could potentially increase the risk of cervical cancer in the future.
At MUMS, your cervical sample is tested for:
High-Risk HPV
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common virus. Certain types of HPV are described as high-risk because persistent infection with these types can cause changes to the cells of the cervix.
Most HPV infections clear naturally without causing problems, but persistent high-risk HPV infection is associated with an increased risk of cervical cell abnormalities.
Cytology involves examining cells collected from the cervix under a microscope to look for abnormal cellular changes.
Combining HPV testing with cytology provides useful information about both high-risk HPV and the appearance of the cervical cells.
The NHS Cervical Screening Programme currently uses primary HPV screening.
This means that the cervical sample is initially tested for high-risk HPV. If high-risk HPV is detected, the sample is then usually examined for abnormal cervical cells (cytology).
At MUMS, our private cervical screening service includes both high-risk HPV testing and cytology as part of the laboratory assessment.
Your MUMS clinician will explain your results and advise whether any further investigation or follow-up is recommended.
Your appointment includes:
The appointment takes approximately 30 minutes.
Results are usually available within approximately 7 days.
Occasionally laboratory processing or additional assessment may mean that results take a little longer.
Once your results are available, they will be shared with you and you will be offered a free-of-charge follow-up to have the findings explained.
If your result indicates that further investigation is recommended, your clinician will discuss the appropriate next steps with you.
An HPV-positive result does not mean that you have cervical cancer.
HPV is extremely common, and many infections clear naturally.
If high-risk HPV or abnormal cervical cells are identified, your clinician will explain what the result means and whether you require:
MUMS can help you understand your result and arrange appropriate onward care where required.
Cervical screening is primarily designed for people without symptoms.
If you are experiencing symptoms such as:
please tell us when making your appointment.
These symptoms do not necessarily mean that anything serious is wrong, but a cervical smear alone may not be the most appropriate investigation.
MUMS can arrange an appointment with one of our Consultant Gynaecologists or Women's Health GPs so that your symptoms can be properly assessed and the most appropriate investigations recommended.
If you are seeing one of our Consultant Gynaecologists and would also like a cervical smear, this can be added to your Gynaecology Scan and Consultation.
Gynaecology Scan and Consultation – £420
Additional Cervical Smear with HPV and Cytology – £200
This can be particularly helpful for women who have other gynaecological symptoms or concerns that require investigation in addition to cervical screening.
