Children's Eczema

Eczema is one of the most common skin conditions affecting children. It can cause dry, itchy, inflamed and uncomfortable skin and may range from relatively mild patches to more persistent symptoms that interfere with sleep and everyday life.

During your child's consultation, the clinician will assess their skin, discuss their symptoms and previous treatments, and consider factors that may be contributing to flare-ups.

Treatment will be tailored to your child and may include advice about skincare and emollients, prescription treatments and strategies for managing future flare-ups.

Where appropriate, your clinician can arrange follow-up to review how well treatment is working.

Teenage & Adolescent Acne

Acne can have an impact far beyond the skin. For some teenagers it can affect confidence, self-esteem and emotional wellbeing, particularly when acne is persistent or beginning to cause scarring.

If over-the-counter treatments have not helped, or you are concerned about the severity of your child's acne, our clinicians can provide a specialist assessment.

Treatment depends on your child's age and the type and severity of their acne and may include topical treatments, oral medication or a combination of treatments.

Your clinician will explain the available options, including their potential benefits, risks and side effects, and develop an appropriate treatment plan with you and your child.

At MUMS we understand the constraints of the NHS waiting times. Opting for a private paediatric dermatologist can remove undue stress, read more about teenage and adolescent acne treatment.

What Happens at a Paediatric Dermatology Appointment?

Your clinician will take time to understand your concerns and assess your child's skin carefully.

The consultation may include:

  • A detailed history of the skin problem
  • Examination of the affected areas
  • Review of previous treatments
  • Discussion of possible causes or diagnosis
  • Advice about skincare and symptom management
  • Treatment recommendations
  • Prescribing where clinically appropriate
  • Further investigations where required
  • A follow-up plan

We recognise that children and teenagers can sometimes feel anxious or self-conscious about skin problems. Our clinicians aim to make appointments comfortable, respectful and age-appropriate.

Tests & Investigations

Sometimes a skin condition requires further investigation before a diagnosis or treatment plan can be confirmed.

Where clinically appropriate, MUMS can arrange investigations such as:

  • Blood tests
  • Swabs for infection
  • Urine tests
  • Dermoscopy
  • Skin biopsy
  • Allergy investigations

Additional investigations incur separate charges, which will be explained before they are undertaken.

Where tests are arranged as part of your consultation, we will explain how and when you will receive the results and whether further review is required.

Allergy & General Paediatric Care

Some skin symptoms can occur alongside allergies or other childhood health concerns.

Dr Vijay Iyer also provides General Paediatric consultations and allergy assessment at MUMS, allowing further investigation where this is clinically appropriate.
