Teenage and Adolescent Acne treatment with Dr Vijay Iyer and Dr Vandna Sharma - Private Consultant Paediatric Dermatologists – without the wait

Skin conditions such as acne can leave your teenager or adolescent feeling embarrassed and self-conscious. If your child has acne and you have tried over the counter medications and want a specialist opinion to control the acne, avoid scarring etc - then you can consult with Dr Vijay Iyer – Consultant Paediatric Dermatologist or MUMS Dermatology GP – Dr Vandna Sharma.

You will be seen in an unrushed, affordable consultation to discuss various treatments including oil reduction production to tackle the acne.

MUMS Consultant/Dermatology GP will decide with you which is the most appropriate and best treatment for the acne, based on your child’s age and the type of acne. The risks, benefits etc will be discussed in terms of topical and oral medication and/or a combination.

Prescriptions are issued for moderate acne and prevent hair follicle plugging.

Antibiotics kill bacteria and can be used in combination with retinoid topical applications. Antibiotics are used for moderate acne and often the first choice.

Combined oral contraceptives which combine progestin and oestrogen may be an option for some adolescent girls with acne.

Anti-androgen medications can be considered for girls if oral antibiotics are not helping.

Isotretinoin

Special medication for acne is prescribed for people with severe acne that has not responded to other forms of treatment. Some drugs can only be prescribed by a Consultant Dermatologist/Dermatology GP -who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of acne.

If Dr Vijay or Dr Vandna feel that this treatment is clinically appropriate you will have the side effects and monitoring explained to you and the blood tests that you will need prior to treatment. You can choose to have the blood tests at MUMS or with your own GP practice. MUMS blood test charges are on our website.

Isotretinoin will not be prescribed at the first consultation.

Starting Medication Appointments cost £150

Follow Up Consultations cost £150

Your liver function will be monitored throughout the cycle of treatment.

Acne advice

The below information may be useful:

  • Avoid washing affected areas more than twice daily to reduce irritation.
  • Use a mild cleanser and only lukewarm water.
  • Avoid squeezing blackheads and spots to avoid scarring.
  • Do not use too many cosmetics and make up and always remove before bedtime.
  • Avoid your hair falling on your face.
  • Be patient with treatment – results are not quick but work well after a few weeks.

Teenage acne ranges from mild breakouts to moderate or severe cases that can affect confidence and cause scarring. If over-the-counter products and GP advice haven’t worked, private dermatologists offer quicker access to specialist assessment and prescription-strength treatments — without long NHS waiting lists.

Private treatment also means tailored plans, more time with specialists, and the option for advanced therapies if needed.

At MUMS we understand the constraints of the NHS waiting times.  Opting for a private paediatric dermatologist can remove undue stress.

What to Expect

Dr Vijay Iyer and Dr Vandna Sharma have been providing paediatric dermatology services at MUMS Solihull since 2021 – we receive award winning patient testimonials regarding the care we provide. Our Doctors are experts in acne advice and treatment for children and adults.

If MUMS consultants need additional diagnostics and tests – they will perform these during the consultation – such as blood tests, biopsies, urine tests, dermoscopy, swabs for infections. These incur additional charges and results are rapid. Results of tests are provided and interpreted free of charge remotely.

Repeat prescriptions cost £20

Seeing a Private Paediatric Dermatologist in a private clinic means that your child, teenager, or adolescent does not have to wait to be seen – as is the case in the NHS. Appointments are longer and individualised care is optimised. Early diagnosis and treatment help prevent children’s and teenagers skin complaints from getting to the stage that is hard to treat.
