At Midlands Ultrasound & Medical Services (MUMS), we understand that having a blood test can sometimes feel daunting for children and their parents.

That's why we offer a dedicated private paediatric phlebotomy service for children aged 1 to 16 years, provided by Pippa Bowen, our trained Paediatric Phlebotomist.

Pippa provides a calm, friendly, and reassuring approach to taking blood samples from children, helping them feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible.

Whether your child requires a routine blood test, allergy testing, nutritional screening or another laboratory investigation, our service offers convenient access to private blood sampling without lengthy waiting times.

Our clinic is based at 1 Park Avenue, Solihull, B91 3EJ, with ample free parking.

Meet Pippa Bowen – Paediatric Phlebotomist

Dedicated Children's Blood Test Appointments

Pippa Bowen is a trained Paediatric Phlebotomist who provides blood-taking appointments at MUMS.

She understands that children can feel nervous about needles and takes a patient, gentle and supportive approach, explaining the procedure in an age-appropriate way and allowing children time to feel comfortable.

Our aim is to make the experience as straightforward and reassuring as possible for both children and parents.

Every Friday, 8am–4pm

All appointments for paediatric phlebotomy only are booked with Pippa on Fridays.

The service is available for children aged 1 to 16 years.

How Much Does Paediatric Phlebotomy Cost?

Paediatric Phlebotomy Appointment – £50

This is a 15-minute appointment for blood sampling only.

The cost of the laboratory blood test is charged separately and depends on the investigations required.

For example, your child may require a single blood test or a combination of tests, such as an allergy profile, full blood count, iron studies, or vitamin testing.

Our team can provide the laboratory test prices before you book.

Please note: The £50 phlebotomy fee does not include a medical consultation, interpretation of results or treatment advice.

Do We Need to See a Consultant Paediatrician First?

No. You can book a paediatric phlebotomy-only appointment directly with Pippa, provided the required blood tests have been identified.

However, if you are unsure which investigations your child needs, or if your child has symptoms that require medical assessment, we recommend booking a consultation with one of our Consultant Paediatricians.

Private Consultant Paediatrician Appointment – £245

A consultation allows the paediatrician to:

  • Discuss your child's symptoms and medical history.
  • Undertake a clinical assessment where appropriate.
  • Recommend the most suitable blood tests or other investigations.
  • Explain the significance of the results.
  • Recommend any further investigations, treatment or follow-up required.

Where blood tests are arranged as part of a consultant-led assessment, the consultant can provide and interpret the results through a follow-up remote consultation, included within the consultation pathway.

Any laboratory tests and blood sampling fees are charged separately where applicable.

What Blood Tests Can Children Have at MUMS?

MUMS provides access to a wide range of private laboratory investigations for children, subject to clinical suitability and laboratory requirements.

These may include:

  • Full blood count and iron studies.
  • Vitamin D, vitamin B12 and folate.
  • Thyroid function tests.
  • Allergy blood tests and specific IgE testing.
  • Coeliac screening.
  • Liver and kidney function tests.
  • Inflammatory markers.
  • Nutritional and deficiency screening.
  • Other laboratory tests requested by a GP or Consultant Paediatrician.

Some investigations may require additional clinical information, specific sample handling, or a consultation before testing.

Our team can advise whether the requested investigation is available and suitable for your child's age.

Can We Bring an NHS Blood Test Request Form?

Yes. If your child's NHS GP or hospital clinician has provided a blood test request form, you can bring this to your appointment.

MUMS can arrange private blood sampling and laboratory testing for investigations we are able to provide.

Please be aware that MUMS is a private healthcare provider, and both the phlebotomy fee and laboratory testing costs are payable privately.

Your NHS request form helps us identify the tests required, but the samples will be processed through our private laboratory arrangements.

Results from phlebotomy-only appointments will be shared with you so that you can discuss them with the clinician who requested the tests.

Preparing Your Child for Their Blood Test

A little preparation can make a big difference to your child's experience.

Before the appointment:

  • Explain to your child, in simple and reassuring language, why they are having a blood test.
  • Encourage them to drink plenty of water beforehand unless they have been instructed to fast or restrict fluids.
  • Make sure they are warm and comfortable, as this can help when taking blood.
  • Dress them in clothing that allows easy access to their arms.
  • Bring a favourite toy, book, or distraction if this helps them feel relaxed.
  • Tell us in advance if your child has previously fainted, become very distressed or experienced difficulties during blood tests.

Anaesthetic cream

Local anaesthetic cream may be used to help reduce discomfort. Please ask our team about availability and the appropriate application time before your appointment.

During the appointment

Pippa will explain what is going to happen and help your child feel as comfortable as possible.

Blood is taken using venepuncture, which involves collecting a sample from a vein, usually in the arm.

We do not offer finger-prick blood testing.

Although every effort is made to obtain the sample successfully, blood collection cannot always be guaranteed, and occasionally a procedure may need to be stopped or rearranged.

How Long Will It Take to Receive the Results?

Many routine laboratory results are available within approximately 48 hours, although some specialist tests can take up to two weeks or longer.

Our team will advise you of the expected turnaround time for the investigations requested.

Phlebotomy-Only Appointments

If you book a £50 phlebotomy-only appointment, MUMS will email the laboratory report to the parent or person with parental responsibility, in accordance with our results procedures.

This service does not include interpretation of the results or a medical consultation.

If you would like a doctor to interpret the findings, explain their significance or recommend treatment, a separate medical consultation will be required.

Consultant Paediatrician Appointments

If your child's blood tests have been arranged as part of a Consultant Paediatrician consultation, the results can be reviewed and explained as part of the agreed consultant-led care pathway.
