Gynaecology Scans and Female Pelvis

For women – choose a Consultant Gynaecologist or Senior Sonographer – Consultation and Scan or Scan only. MUMS Gynae scans include cervix, uterus, ovaries, bladder, endometrium. A Gynae scan is also referred to as a female pelvis scan and includes transabdominal and transvaginal scans.

Ovarian Scan

For women – choose a Consultant Gynaecologist or Senior Sonographer – Consultation and Scan or Scan only. This adult ovarian scan assesses the size and shape of the Uterus and the ovaries. This scan is used to detect ovarian pathology such as cysts and cancer

Fertility scans

For Women – choice of Consultant Gynaecologist or Senior Sonographer for investigating Infertility, monitoring natural or assisted fertility cycles and preparing for fertility treatment

Renal Scan including Bladder and Kidney for Women

No referral necessary – No waiting – Available 6 days per week. MUMS radiographers and sonographers will look at images of your right and left kidney and prepare a report. This is to exclude hydronephrosis and dilated ureters. A survey of the urinary bladder will also be undertaken to rule out any bladder wall abnormalities or focal lesions within the bladder itself.

Abdominal (upper) Scans Adult Men and Women

No referral necessary – No waiting – Available 6 days per week. The Upper Abdomen adult ultrasound scan for Men and Women - examines the liver, gall bladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, and the abdominal aorta.

Full Abdominal Scans Adult Men and Women

MSK (Musculoskeletal) Scans for Men and Women

Renal Scan including bladder, kidney, and Prostate for Men

Bladder and Prostate ultrasounds examine the kidney, bladder, and prostate to look at the appearance, shape, and size. Any enlargement is detected. The sonographer can see stones, cysts or tumours and may find out the cause of urine infections.

Scrotal and Testes Scans for Men

Male Sonographer, choose consultation or scan only. MUMS Sonographers perform adult scrotal ultrasound to look for reasons of pain or swelling. They can detect masses in the scrotum and rule out cancer. They can see whether there are any cysts or torsions.

What you can expect at MUMS when attending for an ultrasound

Ultrasound is a painless procedure with little or no preparation (apart from abdominal ultrasound). An ultrasound lasts for approximately 15-30 minutes.

A chaperone assistant will greet you and take you to one of MUMS ultrasound suites. MUMS uses the latest scanning machines and displays the images on a large screen for you to see during your scan. The chaperone assistant will respect your dignity with drapes.

The radiographer/sonographer/consultant will commence scanning, analyse the images, listen and assess the blood flow, and prepare the report. The sonographer will talk to you and show you the screen to enable you to understand his/her findings.

Once the ultrasound is complete the clinician will talk to you again about their findings. They will give you a signed copy of your report and offer you a follow up with one of our GPs or Consultants if necessary. We can give you an additional copy of the report to forward and discuss with your own clinician or GP.

Before attending any abdominal scan, you must prepare as follows:
No food or drink six hours prior to scan – only water
Please do not eat anything after midnight, for a morning scan appointment
It is advisable to drink 2 or more cups of water before the scan as a full bladder is required to accurately assess the bladder and for diagnosing water retention
Regular medication should be taken as normal
No smoking or vaping six hours prior to scan (this can affect visualisation of the gall bladder).

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No, you do not need a referral, you can just book in for a scan. We will provide you with a full report at the end of the scan and you can forward a copy to your GP as well.
How do I prepare for this type of scans?

We will ask you to not eat or drink anything after 9pm the night before the scan, except for water. If you have a full abdominal scan, it is good to drink water as we can measure your bladder before and after emptying to make sure there is no urine retention.
Can you check my kidneys for stones?

Yes, we check and measure both kidneys for stones, cysts…etc.
Can you check the intestines via ultrasound?

No, we cannot assess colon, stomach and intestines via ultrasound.
What do you check during the full abdominal scan?

We check: liver, spleen, kidneys, gall bladder, pancreas, prostate for men, urinary bladder and portal vein (takes blood into the liver).
When do I get the results?

You get the results immediately after the scan, we email you a copy of the report and we can give you a printed copy for your GP as well.
