At MUMS we offer ultrasound scan of the Upper Abdominal area to patients aged 16 and over.

MUMS radiographers, sonographers offer upper abdominal ultrasound. This diagnostic is safe, non-invasive, and reliable. Bouncing sound waves off your body’s tissues and organs – our clinicians can see detailed images to examine your upper abdominal area to look for the presence of abnormalities and diagnose pain or distention ( enlargement). The procedure takes around 20 minutes. Using ultrasound to assess the upper abdominal area helps clinicians identify prostate conditions before they become serious or unmanageable. Abdominal ultrasound examinates all areas of the upper abdominal area and the organs to include:

• Liver
• Gall Bladder
• Pancreas
• Spleen
• Kidney
• Abdominal Aorta 

MUMS sonographers and radiographers can evaluate the cause of stomach pain or bloating, liver disease and tumours and many other conditions.

Your doctor may recommend that you have an upper abdominal ultrasound if you're at risk of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. 

There is no need for a referral from your NHS GP – you can self-refer for peace of mind. 

We ask you to refrain from eating, drinking, and smoking for at least 6 hours before the procedure.

Our chaperone assistants will provide you with a modesty sheet for your dignity. Gel is used to glide the transducer and pictures and measurements of the upper abdominal area are taken by the clinician.

You will be given a detailed report that you can give to your referring clinician and a copy will be in your MUMS electronic medical record should you wish to consult with the Consultant or Private GP at MUMS.

There are no waiting times at MUMS. We offer abdominal ultrasound most days of week.
