Frequently Asked Questions

  • A Cardiologist is a specialist doctor who can assess, diagnose, and treat patients with defects and diseases of the heart.

  • A paediatric cardiologist can offer consultation on a variety of symptoms in babies, children and teenagers ranging from murmurs, palpitations, chest pain, blue spells, funny turns. In addition, they would be able to offer an opinion and diagnostic tests for assessing the heart structure and function in conditions which can be genetic, related to family history and systemic conditions (e.g. hypertension, connective tissue, etc.). They can also offer a screening for children and teenagers who undertake competitive sports.

  • We would offer a one-stop assessment with a 30-minute consultation with an experienced paediatric cardiologist. We would also undertake any additional tests that would be needed as a part of the assessment - commonly ECG & echocardiogram which would be done at the same time. If there is an indication for further tests such as rhythm monitoring, and/or blood tests, these can be arranged at a time suitable to the family.

  • As ECG & echocardiogram are done at the same time, we would be able to offer you these results at the end of the consultation. The results of any other tests that we do subsequent to the consultation will be emailed/posted to you.

  • Paediatric consultations must be undertaken in the presence of responsible adult, parent or an adult with whom the child/young person lives to be able to help with the consultation, discussion and counselling. Both parents are welcome to attend.

  • It is not necessary to bring NHS records but any additional information, particularly related to any relevant family history of a heart condition may be helpful.

  • If there is a need for a subsequent consultation, this can be offered at the relevant time. The cost for a follow up consultation is £150.

  • You are under no obligation to continue with MUMS after your consultation with us. Any further consultations and/or tests that may be necessary can be directed back into NHS pathways through your GP.
