Our ENT Surgeon, Miss Emma Hoskisson performs microscopic microscution ear wax removal. The ear wax is removed from the ear under a microscope in a treatment room.
The microscope is used to directly visualise the ear canal and drum whilst wax it is being removed. Microsuction ear wax removal typically takes between 15 to 30 minutes to perform. This can vary depending on the amount and type of ear wax, how deep the ear wax is inside the ear canal, and whether you are having one or both ears treated. It is performed with you laying down on a bed with your head titled to the side so that the ear with ear wax can be accessed.
Unlike ear syringing or ear irrigation, where ear wax is flushed out ‘blindly’, Microsuction with a microscope allows the ear wax to be directly visualised under the whilst it is being removed. This makes the procedure much safer and comfortable for the patient.
Recent guidance from NICE (National Institute for Health and Care excellence) states that ear syringing should no longer be used. As a result alternatives such as Microsuction with an ENT Consultant is the Gold standard.
