Illumina NIPT at MUMS

The Illumina NIPT costs £425 and includes an ultrasound scan.

Illumina is recommended at MUMS by our fetal medicine consultants, gynaecologists, obstetricians, and sonographers – mainly because of the test accuracy, turnaround times, expert laboratory geneticists, price, and low failure rates.

Illumina includes screening for:

  • Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome), Trisomy 18 (Edwards Syndrome), Trisomy 13 (Patau Syndrome)
  • Sex Chromosome Aneuploidy – It is useful to detect the difference in the number of X and Y chromosome. This can result in certain learning and/or behavioural challenges in addition to other health issues. Note- Not available for twin pregnancies.
  • Fetal sex – Knowing whether your baby is male or female for single pregnancies. With twins we recommend Panorama if the gender of baby is required. You may opt out of Fetal Sex and Sex Chromosome Aneuploidy. The Illumina test also does not assess the risk of mosaicism, partial trisomies or translocations.

Illumina NIPT results normally take up to 7 days for a result. Delays can occur due to bank holidays, and sample failure.

Illumina NIPT Test can be used in singleton and IVF pregnancies, but limitations exist for twin and egg donor pregnancies. We recommend Panorama for twins and egg donor pregnancies.

  • Illumina NIPT includes screening for - Down/Edwards and Patau syndromes, fetal sex, and sex chromosome aneuploidy.
  • Requires lower fetal fraction of 1% - reduced chance of test failure.
  • Fast turnaround time – approx. 7 days.

Illumina prenatal testing cannot be used for patients with:

  • Malignancy
  • Fetal demise
  • Triplets and Quads
  • Organ/Bone marrow transplant
