Ultrasound Scan of the Kidney

At MUMS we offer ultrasound scan of the Kidney.

We can offer peace of mind and reassurance with high calibre radiographers performing a scan of your kidneys. Ultrasound is non-invasive, safe, and reliable. Kidney ultrasound can sometimes be referred to as renal ultrasound.

Sometimes kidney problems can manifest itself as lower back / flank pain and ultrasound can often help rule out or rule in a kidney issue as a cause for this flank pain.

Although ultrasound is not the correct test to identify the kidneys’ overall function, it is perfect to assess the overall kidney structure and appearance.   A kidney ultrasound may be used to assess the size, location, and shape of the kidneys and related structures, such as the ureters and bladder. Ultrasound can detect cysts, tumours, abscesses, obstructions, fluid collection, and infection within or around the kidneys. Ultrasound of the kidneys assesses shape, size and location of both kidneys and assesses the blood flow.  Kidney Ultrasound can also identify congenital anomalies that may also give rise to certain conditions and symptoms, that would otherwise go unnoticed. This ultrasound helps diagnose many different medical conditions. The kidneys get rid of waste from your blood which leave our bodies as urine.

MUMS radiographers and sonographers will look at images of your right and left kidney and prepare a report. To obtain the best images you should attend with a full bladder, and you should avoid fatty meals before the test. This is to exclude hydronephrosis and dilated ureters.

A survey of the urinary bladder will also be undertaken to rule out any bladder wall abnormalities or focal lesions within the bladder itself.

We ask that patients drink 1.5-2 litres of water or squash 1 hour before the scan.

MUMS patients can self-refer or bring a referral from their clinician. There are no waiting times and booking is easy.

A adult kidney scan costs £210.00. ( aged over 18 years)

A paediatric kidney scan costs £250.00

You will be given a report at the end of the scan. The report can be analysed by MUMS clinicians for any onward referral or more investigative testing such as kidney function testing or a consultation with MUMS Consultant Urologist.

You can call us on 0121 704 2669 to book or you can make an enquiry on our website. You can even book and pay online. We have ample parking and great reviews.

We also offer kidney function tests.

MUMS has been offering ultrasound for two decades – offering affordable ultrasound for rapid diagnosis using the most experienced clinicians.
