We recommend a GP Consultation to ensure that this is the most appropriate test for you.

If you opt for a consultation and test then you will be followed up with a telephone consultation to have the results explained to you.

The turnaround time for the results getting back to MUMS is 24 hours.

If you opt for a phlebotomy appointment to have the test – we email the result to you and if abnormal you will need to book a £50 GP remote consultation to have the results of the test explained to you.

A kidney function test is done to check how well your kidneys are working. Kidneys play a vital role in keeping your body balanced and healthy, so testing helps catch problems early or monitor known conditions.

Here are the main reasons it’s done:

Detect kidney disease early - Kidney problems often don’t cause symptoms at first. Tests can reveal early damage before you feel unwell when treatment is most effective.

Monitor existing kidney conditions - If you already have kidney disease, regular testing shows:

  • Whether it’s getting better or worse
  • How well treatment or lifestyle changes are working

Certain conditions can damage kidneys, including:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Autoimmune disorders

Kidney tests help monitor kidney effects from these conditions.

Ensure medications are safe

Some medicines (like painkillers, antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, or lithium) can affect kidney function.

Our kidneys remove waste products from the blood and this blood test measures how well the kidneys are working. The test can pick up kidney disease, dehydration and allow initial investigation into whether you may have kidney stones.

This test is often called Urea and Electrolytes
