Private Cereal Allergy testing at MUMS for adults and children

A cereal allergy blood test (specific IgE test) is used to check whether the immune system is reacting to proteins found in cereals such as:

  • Wheat
  • Barley
  • Rye
  • Oats

It helps determine whether symptoms are due to a true IgE-mediated food allergy rather than intolerance or coeliac disease.

Why Someone Might Need a Cereal Allergy Blood Test

To Investigate Immediate Food Reactions

Testing is useful if symptoms occur soon after eating cereal-based foods like bread, pasta, breakfast cereals, or baked goods.

Typical allergy symptoms may include:

  • Hives or itchy rash
  • Lip, face, or throat swelling
  • Vomiting or abdominal pain
  • Wheezing or breathing difficulty
  • Dizziness or collapse (anaphylaxis in severe cases)

In Children with Eczema

Children with moderate to severe eczema may have food allergies that can trigger flare-ups. Testing may be considered if:

  • Eczema worsens after cereal consumption
  • There is a history of other food allergies
  • There are immediate-type reactions

Exercise-Induced Wheat Allergy

Some individuals experience:

  • Allergic reactions only when wheat ingestion is followed by exercise
This is known as wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis, and blood testing can help support diagnosis.

To Guide Safe Dietary Advice

Confirming an allergy helps:

  • Avoid unnecessary food restrictions
  • Create a safe dietary plan
  • Assess the need for emergency medication

We offer simple blood tests but combine several different foods together to make a profile to give you a bigger picture of what type of food you may be allergic to or intolerant of.

Cereal Allergy Test costs £136.00

Testing with a GP for Adults

The Consultation with our experienced GPs is £120.00 plus the cost of the allergy test. The GP will perform the allergy blood test and explain the results to you free of charge.

You may choose to have a simple £35 Phlebotomy appointment in which to be tested. The results would be emailed to you, and you would need to have a paid consultation to have the results explained to you.

Testing with a Paediatric Consultant for babies and children

For children under 16 years old you will need to book in with our specialist consultant paediatrician for a consultation and allergy testing. The cost of a consultation with the paediatrician is £245.00 plus the cost of the test. Alternatively – you may just decide to have your child tested without a consultation. A blood test with our paediatrician costs £50 plus the cost of the test. This does not include a consultation. The results would be emailed to you, and you would need to have a paid consultation to have the results explained to you.

We do not recommend allergy test for babies under 6 months. You may still wish to have a consultation with the Paediatrician to discuss any issues you and your baby may be facing.

Results are back in 2 days.

At MUMS we also offer coeliac testing. It is for this reason we recommend a GP Consultation to ensure which test is appropriate for you. Coeliac disease is very different from intolerances and allergies and is caused by inflammation of the small intestine.

A lot of people have a reaction to certain food types. For example, digestive problems such as abdominal pain and bloating or skin problems such as rashes and hives. There is a difference between intolerance and allergies, but they are both unpleasant. It is best to jot down what you have eaten and so when you have a reaction you have a better chance of pinning down what it might be. If you have a strong reaction, you should seek medical advice. At MUMS – our Private GPs consult with you and take a full history and examination and help you manage your allergies and intolerances by eliminating what it is your body does not like.

If you suffer from bloating or abdominal pain or diarrhoea following certain foods or have skin sensitivities and develop itching or rashes or hives – although these can be caused by other factors such as stress and IBS – they could be due to some of the foods listed above that you should avoid.

MUMS experience of providing allergy testing has enabled us to group common allergen tests together.

This Cereal combination test gives our GPs and you a good idea as to what it is that is causing your allergic symptoms or your intolerance of.

Our allergy component testing may be a better option for you than our single allergy tests.

We offer allergy testing 6 days a week.

Our GPs are experienced in both adult and childhood allergies and testing.

We have ample parking and great reviews. You can call us on 0121 704 2669 or email us administrator@mums.me.uk
