Types of Contraception

Contraception is available in many different forms. There are advantages and disadvantages for each. The main types of contraception include the following: • Condoms – can protect against sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) • Contraceptive Pill – taken daily • Contraceptive Implants – flexible rods inserted into your arm. Can be in place up to three years • Coil – Mirena Hormonal or Copper Coil (IUD). Can be in place for up to 5 years (Mirena) up to 10 years (copper) • Depot injection – effective up to 13 weeks
