One Stop Cystoscopy Clinic

MUMS Consultant Urological Surgeon, Mr Dev Sarmah offers a ONE STOP SHOP Consultation and Cystoscopy Clinic.

This service is generally for men and women aged over 40yrs with the following conditions:

  • Haematuria – often referred to as blood in the urine, frank blood, or persistent microscopic blood in the urine
  • Bladder infection or recurring bladder Infections, recurring urinary tract infections ( UTI’s )
  • Suspected bladder cancer
  • Persistent catheter problems with frequent blockages or difficult urethral strictures
  • Patients not wanting to wait for NHS Cystoscopy either as a diagnostic procedure or as follow up for bladder cancer checks

You may have been referred for a cystoscopy on the NHS and are frustrated at the waiting time. You may have blood in the urine or feel you have a bladder infection. You may be worried about bladder cancer. Cystoscopy is often used to treat many catheter problems. A private cystoscopy is the perfect solution to check for and treat bladder and urethra issues swiftly.

One stop diagnostic flexible cystoscopy under local anaesthesia is suitable for patients with either visible or persistent non-visible haematuria (presence of blood in the urine). This is also indicated for women above the age of 40 with recurrent urinary tract infections. In addition, ureteric stents inserted for stone disease can be removed when NHS waiting lists are long. Bladder biopsies can be undertaken in selected patients. The latter two procedures would incur additional costs.

Mr Dev Sarmah, Consultant Urological Surgeon at MUMS will take a detailed medical history, with physical examination and carry out a diagnostic flexible cystoscopy if required for a real time visualisation of your urinary bladder. The flexible cystoscope is a very small tube with a thin camera that is inserted into the urethra, the urethra is the organ that carries urine out of your body ( your water pipe) .

Apart from mild discomfort for a few seconds during application of the local anaesthetic jelly, the procedure is very well tolerated without pain. You may experience small amounts of Ribena coloured urine afterwards. Flexible cystoscopy is an out-patient procedure so patients can resume normal duties for the rest of the day.

MUMS cystoscope is a flexible, thin long high-tech camera which displays high resolution images of your bladder onto a monitor. There is no general anaesthesia involved. You are completely awake.

The aim is to visualise the urethra and urinary bladder. This is for diagnosis and biopsy procedures that can be undertaken at the same time if required – to investigate suspicious areas. To minimise the risk of infection, patients with certain factors are given an antibiotic prior to the procedure.

Private cystoscopy combined with an expert urological consultation is popular for those patients wanting:

  • Rapid answers and treatment for blood in the urine
  • Deal swiftly with urinary tract infections ( UTI’s )
  • Tackle any pelvic pain and problems with urinating
  • Take a biopsy
  • Check for bladder cancers
  • Removing bladder stents that were inserted to treat blockages where the NHS waiting time is long

Some cystoscopies are rigid ( not flexible ) cystoscopies and are carried out in a hospital theatre setting. MUMS offer flexible cystoscopy which does not require you to be sedated or have a spinal block.

The actual appointment will be approximately one hour to include consultation and cystoscopy. This could be longer if a procedure is performed such as biopsy.

The benefits of a One Stop Urology clinic – are:

  • Much more efficient service – one visit – consultation, investigation, and treatment
  • Consultant led
  • Urine and Blood testing on site
  • Ultrasound Scans on site
  • Minimally invasive compared to rigid cystoscopy where anaesthesia is required
  • Biopsies and stents dealt with at the same appointment
  • No referral necessary and no waiting times
  • Eliminate uncertainties
  • Enhanced patient experience
