Ovarian cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the ovaries (or in the fallopian tubes or peritoneum, which are closely related tissues). It most commonly affects women after menopause, but it can occur at any age. Early ovarian cancer often causes vague or mild symptoms, which is why it’s sometimes diagnosed late and is often referred to as the whispering cancer.

Common symptoms include:

• Persistent bloating
• Pelvic or abdominal pain
• Feeling full quickly when eating
• Urinary urgency or frequency
• Unexplained weight loss or gain
• Changes in bowel habits
• Fatigue

Risk Factors:

• Age over 50
• Family history of ovarian, breast, or bowel cancer
• BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations
• Lynch syndrome
• Never having been pregnant
• Endometriosis
• Hormone replacement therapy (long-term use)

Ovarian cancer is one that hides and is difficult to diagnose until the late stages. In the early stages it mimics irritable bowel syndrome and patients often complain of irregularity in their bowel movements. Abdominal bloating is also a very common feature of this condition. It is often diagnosed in the post-menopausal years. However, there is also another peak in the late teens/early twenties.

A scan and consultation with Miss Pradhan or Miss Woodhead costs £420.00 and includes a report to your NHS GP or Consultant.
