Which Test to Choose?

Early Symptoms or recent exposure within 2 weeks
A PCR test is more appropriate to detect the active virus.
Later Symptoms or after 2-12 weeks post exposure
An antibody test is better to check for an immune response.
Pregnancy
PCR is recommended for pregnant women with potential exposure to Zika, as the virus can cause serious health problems for the fetus.
Other Flaviviruses
Antibody tests can sometimes produce false positives for Zika if a person has also been infected with related viruses like dengue or West Nile, which require further testing (like a PRNT) for confirmation.

Zika Virus Testing at MUMS Clinic

MUMS offers both PCR and Antibody testing for Zika Virus.

Both PCR and antibody tests are used for Zika diagnosis, but PCR detects the active virus in blood or urine (especially early in infection), while antibody tests detect the body's immune response (later in infection)

A GP Appointment costs £110 where you have a consultation included – in which to have the test is recommended as you then receive a free of charge follow up to have the Prolactin result explained to you.

An adult phlebotomy Appointment costs £30, and a Paediatric phlebotomy appointment costs £50. You are welcome to have either the Zika PCR or Zika Antibody test with our phlebotomist, but you will need a consultation to have the results explained to you. We will send you your result
