| Prolactin Test | £105.00 |
Prolactin is a hormone made by the pituitary gland, a small gland at the base of the brain. Prolactin causes the breasts to grow and make milk during pregnancy and after birth. Prolactin levels are normally high for pregnant women and new mothers. Levels are normally low for non-pregnant women and for men.
A prolactin test measures the level of prolactin hormone in your blood, primarily to check pituitary gland function, diagnose causes of irregular periods/infertility (women) or low libido/erectile dysfunction (men), and investigate milky nipple discharge (galactorrhoea) or headaches, with high levels potentially indicating tumours (prolactinomas), thyroid issues, or stress. Levels naturally rise in pregnancy/breastfeeding, but elevated levels in others can signal problems.
Having a prolactin test also helps find the cause of a woman's menstrual irregularities and/or infertility.
Having a prolactin test helps find the cause of a man's low sex drive and/or erectile dysfunction.
A single test is not always definitive so you may wish to look at MUMS Combination Profiles.
