Private Gluten Sensitivity Profile testing at MUMS for Adults and Children

It’s important to clarify first that a “gluten allergy” is uncommon. Most gluten-related symptoms are due to:

  • Coeliac disease (autoimmune condition)
  • Non-coeliac gluten sensitivity
  • Wheat allergy (true IgE-mediated allergy)

A gluten allergy blood test is usually checking for wheat-specific IgE antibodies, not coeliac disease.

MUMS Gluten Sensitivity Profile tests for:

  • Gluten Single IgE Allergen
  • Gliadin Antibodies (IgG) (deamidated)
  • HLA Tissue Typing Coeliac Disease – DQ2/DQ8
  • Immunoglobulin A
  • Tissue Transglutaminase IgA (Coeliac)

Here’s why someone might get tested:

To Investigate Immediate Reactions to Wheat or Gluten-Containing Foods

Testing is appropriate if symptoms occur shortly after eating foods like bread, pasta, or baked goods.

Possible allergy symptoms include:

  • Hives or itchy rash
  • Swelling of lips, face, or throat
  • Vomiting
  • Wheezing or breathing difficulty
  • Dizziness or collapse (anaphylaxis in severe cases)

This pattern suggests a wheat allergy, not coeliac disease.

To Distinguish Between Wheat Allergy and Coeliac Disease

These conditions are very different:

Condition

Immune Mechanism

Typical Symptoms

Wheat allergy

IgE-mediated

Immediate reactions

Coeliac disease

Autoimmune

Gut symptoms, fatigue, anaemia

Gluten sensitivity

Non-IgE

Bloating, discomfort

Testing helps ensure the correct diagnosis and management plan.

If There Is Unexplained Anaphylaxis

Wheat can sometimes cause:

  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (reaction when wheat ingestion is followed by exercise)

Blood testing can support diagnosis.

In Children with Eczema or Multiple Food Allergies

Children with moderate–severe eczema may be more likely to have IgE-mediated food allergies, including wheat.

Testing may help guide dietary advice if there are clear symptom links.

To Avoid Unnecessary Gluten Restriction

Many people remove gluten without a confirmed diagnosis.

Testing helps:

  • Prevent unnecessary dietary restriction
  • Reduce nutritional risk
  • Ensure the correct condition is treated
  • A positive allergy blood test alone does not confirm clinical allergy.
  • Testing should always be interpreted alongside symptoms.
  • If coeliac disease is suspected, coeliac antibody testing is required instead.
  • Patients should remain on a gluten-containing diet before coeliac testing.

Gluten is contained in lots of common foods – especially carbohydrates such as pasta, bread, cakes.

Gluten Sensitivity Profile - £500

Testing with a GP for Adults

The Consultation with our experienced GPs is £120.00 plus the cost of the allergy test.. The GP will perform the sensitivity profile blood test and explain the results to you free of charge.

You may choose to have a simple £35 Phlebotomy appointment in which to be tested. The results would be emailed to you, and you would need to have a paid consultation to have the results explained to you.

Testing with a Paediatric Consultant for babies and children

For children under 16 years old you will need to book in with our specialist consultant paediatrician for a consultation and allergy testing. The cost of a consultation with the paediatrician is £245.00 plus the cost of the test. Alternatively – you may just decide to have your child tested without a consultation. A blood test with our paediatrician costs £50 plus the cost of the test. This does not include a consultation. The results would be emailed to you, and you would need to have a paid consultation to have the results explained to you.

We do not recommend allergy test for babies under 6 months. You may still wish to have a consultation with the Paediatrician to discuss any issues you and your baby may be facing.

The Gluten Sensitivity Profile Test Results are back within 10 days.

It is of utmost importance for you to understand whether you have a Gluten Allergy/intolerance or Coeliac disease.
