It is important that you check the country you are travelling to – to find out if malaria is prevalent. Malaria can cause fever, vomiting and headaches. Treatment is required. Without treatment, malaria can be serious. Taking anti-malarial medication is important, especially for those whose immunity is compromised. Untreated malaria can cause anaemia and even brain damage.

It is advisable to check the local government websites to ensure you are fully aware of the risk of malaria. We also recommend you fully understand the symptoms in case you do contract malaria. It is important your travel insurance covers you. Our GPs will also advise you about insect repellents and mosquito nets.

A full history will be taken by MUMS GPs and the risks and benefits of taking anti-malarial medication, including instruction – is given to the patients to ensure precautions against malaria are taken. Some countries are listed as high risk and so we urge you to check not just where you are travelling to but if you are going to be going in remote areas.

We will prescribe the anti-malarial medication and ensure you fully understand the instructions, offer you travel health advice and discuss the risks and benefits of immunisation and precautionary measures such as bite prevention and emergency treatment.

It is the female mosquitoes that transmit the parasite infection – usually at night. There is no vaccination against this – but prevention and anti-malarial medication can protect you. When Malaria is present, everyone is at risk. Pregnant women, babies and children and older people have an increased risk.

Although antimalarial medication is not 100% effective – by taking them as a precautionary measure and following bite prevention advice – will reduce your risk of malaria infection.

Anti-Malarial Medication needs to be taken before you travel, and the directions are important.
