Children aged under 2 years should not have cholera Vaccine.
Cholera Vaccine is an oral Vaccine.
Doses are to be administered one week apart. If 6 weeks are more lapse between doses, then the whole dose must be re-started
MUMS Private GPs administer routine and travel vaccinations to adults.
MUMS Consultant Paediatrician administers child vaccinations.
Two doses are required for adults and children from 6 years of age.
Children aged below 6 years should have 3 doses.
85% protection is obtained from oral cholera vaccination following the first two doses – 1 week apart.
This reduced to 50% - 2 years after the first dose.
Cholera infection causes diarrhoea and can be caught from unclean water, some seafood such as shellfish from unclean water and food touched by a cholera infected person. This bacterial infection – left untreated can be fatal. We advise you to have cholera oral vaccine if you are travelling to an area known to be of high risk. It is advisable that you check the area you are travelling to for cholera.
Even when vaccinated you are advised to keep your hands clean and refrain from drinking tap water – even for tooth brushing. Avoid vegetables that are uncooked. Do not have ice unless you have frozen your own bottled water.
