Private Acne Treatment in Solihull

Specialist acne consultations for patients aged 16+

Acne can affect much more than your skin. Persistent or severe acne can cause discomfort, scarring and have a significant impact on confidence and emotional wellbeing.

At MUMS Solihull, we provide private assessment and treatment for acne with our experienced dermatology team:

Dr Huda Al-Kutubi – Consultant Dermatologist
Dr Vandna Sharma – Dermatology GP
Dr Sanah Bholah – Dermatology GP

Whether your acne has recently developed, has persisted for several years or has not improved with over-the-counter or previous prescription treatments, our clinicians can assess your skin and develop an individual treatment plan.

No GP referral is required.

When Should I See a Dermatology Clinician About Acne?

You may wish to arrange an acne consultation if:

  • Over-the-counter treatments haven't worked
  • Your acne is persistent or worsening
  • You have painful spots, nodules or cysts
  • Your acne is beginning to cause scarring
  • You have pigmentation or marks following acne
  • Previous prescription treatments haven't been effective
  • Your acne is affecting your confidence or wellbeing
  • You would like to discuss prescription treatment
  • You are concerned about hormonal acne
  • You would like a specialist opinion about your skin

Early, appropriate treatment can help control acne and may reduce the risk of permanent scarring.

Your Acne Consultation at MUMS

Acne treatment is not one-size-fits-all.

During your appointment, your clinician will assess your skin and take time to understand:

  • How long you have had acne
  • The areas of your face or body affected
  • The type and severity of your acne
  • Treatments you have already tried
  • Your medical history and current medication
  • Whether there may be hormonal factors
  • Whether you have developed scarring or pigmentation
  • How your acne is affecting you

Your clinician will then discuss the most appropriate treatment options, including the expected benefits, potential side effects and how long treatment may take to work.

Acne Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the type and severity of your acne, your medical history and treatments you have previously tried.

Your treatment plan may include:

Topical Treatments

Prescription creams or gels can be used to treat acne directly on the skin. These may include topical retinoids or other acne treatments.

Oral Antibiotics

For some types of moderate or inflammatory acne, a course of oral antibiotics may be considered alongside appropriate topical treatment.

Hormonal Treatment

For some female patients, hormonal treatment may be appropriate. Your clinician can discuss options based on your symptoms, medical history and individual circumstances.

Isotretinoin

For severe, persistent or treatment-resistant acne, isotretinoin may be considered where clinically appropriate.

Isotretinoin is a specialist prescription medication and requires careful assessment, counselling and ongoing monitoring.

Isotretinoin is not prescribed at your first appointment.

If isotretinoin is considered appropriate, your clinician will explain:

  • How the treatment works
  • Potential benefits
  • Important risks and side effects
  • Monitoring requirements
  • Blood tests required before and during treatment
  • Pregnancy-prevention requirements where applicable
  • Follow-up arrangements

Required blood tests can be arranged at MUMS or, where appropriate, through your GP.

For additional patient information about isotretinoin, you can also view the British Association of Dermatologists patient information video.

Acne Treatment Fees

Initial Dermatology Consultation – £245

If isotretinoin treatment is recommended:

Baseline Blood Tests – £150
Includes FBC, U&Es, LFTs and Lipids

Medication Starting Appointment – £150

Follow-Up Consultation – £150

Any additional tests, investigations or medication costs will be explained to you before proceeding.

Looking After Acne-Prone Skin

Alongside medical treatment, looking after your skin appropriately can help reduce irritation and support your treatment plan.

We generally recommend:

  • Wash acne-prone skin gently, no more than twice a day
  • Use lukewarm rather than very hot water
  • Choose a mild, non-abrasive cleanser
  • Avoid squeezing or picking spots, which can increase inflammation and the risk of scarring
  • Choose skincare and cosmetic products labelled non-comedogenic where possible
  • Remove make-up before going to bed
  • Avoid excessive scrubbing or using multiple harsh skincare products at the same time
  • Give prescribed treatments time to work

Acne treatments do not usually produce immediate results. Your clinician will explain when you should expect to see an improvement and when your treatment should be reviewed.

Acne, Scarring & Confidence

Acne is a medical skin condition and its impact can vary considerably from person to person.

For some people, acne can affect self-confidence, social situations, relationships and emotional wellbeing, particularly when it is persistent, painful or causing visible scarring.

You don't need to wait until acne becomes severe before asking for professional advice.

Our dermatology team will take your concerns seriously and work with you to develop a treatment plan appropriate for your skin and individual circumstances.
