Endometrial Biopsy

An endometrial biopsy is a procedure where a small sample of the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) is taken and sent to the lab for testing.

Why it’s done:

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding (heavy, irregular, or postmenopausal bleeding)
  • Thickened endometrium on ultrasound
  • Suspected endometrial hyperplasia
  • To rule out endometrial cancer
  • Monitoring response to hormone treatment

Endometrial Polyp

An endometrial polyp is a growth that develops from the lining of the uterus.

  • Usually benign (non-cancerous)
  • Can vary in size (few mm to several cm)
  • May be single or multiple

Symptoms:

  • Irregular bleeding
  • Heavy periods
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Postmenopausal bleeding
  • Sometimes no symptoms (found incidentally)

Are they cancerous?

  • Most are benign.
  • Small percentage (especially in postmenopausal women) may contain precancerous or cancerous cells.
  • That’s why removal and histology is often recommended.

Polyps are often found in the women undergoing fertility investigations and need to be removed. They often give rise to bleeding in between periods and are best diagnosed just after a period. Post-menopausal women with polyps present with bleeding and this must be investigated.
